Another major benefit of the DALI-based system is that it allows the lighting to be monitored from a central location – vital given the vast size of the terminal. Fluorescent lighting, for instance, uses PCA ballasts to provide effective interfacing with the DALI network, while halogen lighting uses TE one4all units. Throughout the airport there is a mixture of T5 fluorescent lighting and low voltage halogen, using appropriate Tridonic products to optimise control. Needless to say, the system is also able to incorporate energy-saving routines to minimise lighting electrical consumption. It can also be changed to adjust to different lighting conditions during the year as well as user specific situations during the week. So, for example, the lighting may change automatically through the day to suit the changing orientation of the sun. Furthermore, up to 99 independent lighting sequences and 16 lighting scenes, can be preprogrammed into the system so that a wide range of pre-set lighting configurations is readily available.Īirport facilities management staff also have the option of controlling the lighting manually or using calendar-controlled sequences. Even greater versatility is provided by the DALI sequencer, which allows lighting moods (scenes) to be called up one after the other – automatically.Ĭrucially, the system is very easy to use so that airport maintenance staff are able to change lighting scenes without any specialist training, enabling lighting in the terminal lounges to be adjusted very quickly to changing conditions. The x-touchPANEL works in conjunction with the DALI TOUCHPANEL to enable task and mood-specific lighting scenes to be programmed and automatically activated in any DALI lighting control system. The terminal has been constructed by Air China, China’s national flag carrier and leading airline, and features lavish hospitality facilities for travellers, enhanced by highly controllable lighting that can easily be adjusted through Tridonic’s x-touchPANEL to create different scenes to suit moods and activities.
Seen from above, it has the appearance of a flying dragon and is orientated North-South, with an extensive system of skylights facing south east to maximise natural daylight in the terminal building. Fully Feng Shui compliant, it features red columns and a muted gold roof to evoke traditional Chinese colours in a modern design. Opened in March 2008, Terminal 3 is China’s biggest airport terminal and was designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster.
